A Perfect Cup Of Coffee
On Monday, the children in Year 7 were lucky enough to visit the Cupsmith Roastery where they learned how our very own Barfield Blend of coffee is made.
Here are some amazing facts they found out:
"I learned that a coffee bean is actually a seed."
“I never knew that it takes about 3 to 4 years for a coffee tree to bear fruit.”
“The fruit is called the coffee cherry and it turns a bright red when it is ripe and ready to be harvested.”
“We actually got to pour the coffee beans into the machines, watch the temperature change and work the roasting ovens!”
“Most roasting machines maintain a temperature of about 550 degrees Fahrenheit!!”
“I saw that roasting transforms green coffee into the aromatic brown beans and grinding them is what lets all the flavour out. This is what we put into bags for school.”
The children had a wonderful tour, a very hands-on experience in the Roastery and a great talk from George. They left with a souvenir each of an original coffee bean sack and a head full of facts and memories.
