STEM Week Inspires Young Innovators at Barfield

Barfield's very first STEM Week kicked off with an electrifying buzz of excitement on Tuesday, 25th February, and kept the energy going all week! Our school-wide focus has been on helping children think critically, solve problems creatively, and connect their learning to real life.
STEM is more than just four subjects – it's a way of thinking! Through hands-on experiments, coding challenges, and engineering tasks, our pupils have explored, experimented, and innovated their way through the week, building confidence in their own abilities and discovering a passion for discovery and problem-solving.
We have had an extensive programme of activities designed to engage and challenge our pupils. The week has been packed with exciting opportunities, from Lego workshops and robotics programming to a visit from the McLaren design team and technical drawing sessions. Other highlights included building and racing balloon cars, creating structures inspired by the Three Little Pigs, crafting giant outdoor marble runs, and testing their knowledge with a Logo Quiz.
A Week of Hands-On Learning
Tuesday saw the children taking part in various team-based activities in their houses. They enjoyed making and racing balloon cars, constructing the Three Little Pigs' houses out of different materials, and building giant outdoor marble runs. The day also featured Brickies workshops and a challenging Logo Quiz, where pupils tested their knowledge of famous brands.
Wednesday was another action-packed day filled with creativity and innovation. Pupils in the Lower School worked on pasta and play dough bridges, experimented with paper clip chains, and tackled the 100-cup tower challenge. They also had fun designing their very own mini Lego figures. The Upper School engaged in the 100-cup and egg drop challenges and took part in Guess the Bricks and What's the Cost? maths games, and honed their skills in technical drawing and robotics.
Thursday whizzed by—quite literally—with the help of a speedy race car and even more hands-on activities. Upper School children were treated to a fascinating talk by two designers from McLaren Automotive, followed by a closer look at one of their impressive cars. They also explored Fibonacci patterns, designed and built catapults, constructed paper grabbers, and enjoyed a digital Lego session. Meanwhile, the Lower School got creative with paper chains, competed in a maths scavenger hunt, grew rainbows with chromatography experiments, made seed bombs, and launched straw rockets.
A Grand Finale at Legoland
On Friday, we ended our amazing STEM Week with an unforgettable trip to Legoland Windsor! Children from Year 1 to Year 6 had a fantastic day participating in workshops that incorporated LEGO® bricks to reinforce key curriculum targets in English, Computing, and STEM. And, of course, they also had the chance to explore the park and enjoy the rides—a perfect way to celebrate a week of learning, collaboration, and fun!
A Big Thank You!
A huge thank you to Mrs White (Head of Maths) for organising such a fantastic week and to all our dedicated teachers who put in so much effort to make STEM Week a success! We would also like to express our appreciation to Sugar & Spice Events for the stunning balloon decorations, which we are delighted to say are made from natural latex and are biodegradable. These balloons were also reused during World Book Day.
This fully immersive STEM Week has captured the hearts and minds of our children, inspiring them to think critically, solve problems creatively, and see the world through the lens of innovation. We hope their excitement has spilt over into your homes with stories of their adventures in STEM!
