Year 2 Immersed in Japanese Culture for a ‘WOW!’ Learning Experience

At Barfield Prep School, we believe in providing a balanced education that extends beyond the classroom. Our recent Year 2 Japanese ‘WOW!’ Day was a perfect example of how we blend academic learning with cultural exploration, and offer our pupils the opportunity to engage and immerse themselves in the experience.

The day began with a dynamic Taiko drumming session, filling the room with powerful rhythms that set the tone for an exciting journey into Japanese culture. We embraced the movement and energy of this traditional art form, gaining an appreciation for its rich history and expressive nature.

Dressed in traditional attire, we then took part in Japanese dance, moving gracefully through sequences that introduced us to the elegance and discipline of this centuries-old practice.

Lunchtime also provided an opportunity for a culinary adventure, as we all enjoyed fluffy Bao Buns—an introduction to new flavours and textures perhaps, that encouraged us to broaden our palates and appreciate Asian cuisine.

In the afternoon, Mrs. Sucharov led two fantastic sessions on the mindful arts of Calligraphy and Origami. With patience and precision, we had a go at carefully folding intricate shapes and painting delicate characters. Through these activities, we not only develop our fine motor skills and artistic expression but also learn the value of focus and perseverance.

At Barfield, we are committed to providing a breadth of experiences that nurture both academic excellence and a deep appreciation for the world’s diverse cultures. Our Japanese ‘WOW!’ Day was a shining example of this philosophy in action, leaving our Year 2 pupils with lasting memories and valuable new insights into global traditions.
